Construction Starting 2026

  Kansas crosswalk

What's Happening?

In 2020, the city received a grant from FHWA for design of the reconstruction of Kansas St SW in an effort to rebuild the roadway, improve water and storm water utilities, and increase safety with sidewalk improvements and rapid flashing beacons at crosswalks.

The city received bids for the project to construct the improvements on Kansas Street SW between Coe Lane SW and Harman Way S/Hwy 162. The successful bidder Active Construction Inc will partner with the city to construct the improvements that will provide a safer and more robust roadway system for all residents and travelers who use the corridor.

Improvements Include

  • Rebuilding of the road system which will reduce noise, vibrations to the surrounding homes, and will provide traffic calming.

  • Improved paved parking areas to enhance safety and comfort for local homeowners and reduce parking strip maintenance.

  • Sidewalks will be wider and Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliant to provide a safe and continuous walking environment with wheelchair ramps, enhanced street lighting, and existing crosswalks will be upgraded with high visibility crossings like rectangular rapid flashing beacons for pedestrian safety.

  • Upgraded water main and storm water facilities to improve long term reliability of utilities for the neighborhood.

Construction Impacts

  • Lane closures, detours, and flaggers directing traffic
  • Large machinery and truck activity
  • Detours for pedestrians

Schedule - Construction expected to start in early 2026

Construction will start in early 2026 and is expected to take roughly a year and a half. Once the city receives the construction storm water permit, and the contractor has been issued Notice to Proceed, we will update the milestone schedule with additional details.

Funding & Partnerships

The project is funded through FHWA and the Transportation Improvement Board (TIB) from a grant which brings gas tax back into the Orting community.

The city will be working with Parametrix as the Engineer of Record and Construction Manager, along with Active Construction Inc. as the general contractor.
