The City of Orting is one of the best places to be on July 4^th if you like fireworks. From late afternoon to midnight the city is alive with dazzling light, booms and the unmistakable smell of fireworks smoke. The holiday and its festivities bring friends and neighbors together for much needed community interaction. With the festivities also come responsibilities to make sure we are being courteous and respectful neighbors. Here are a few reminders about July 4^th:

1. Illegal fireworks are illegal and the City will have an emphasis police patrol looking for people violating City and State fireworks statutes. Illegal “fireworks” include firecrackers, sky rockets and missiles, bottle rockets, M-80’s, M-100’s, improvised explosive devices and altered fireworks. See the attached sheet outlining what is legal and what is illegal.
2. The City’s municipal code only allows fireworks to be used on July 4^th between 12:01 am and 11:59 pm. Fireworks are not allowed to be used before or after that date.
3. Streets are not permitted to be closed for any purpose unless you have applied for and received a permit from the City. Permits must be applied for 30 days before the proposed street closure and there have been no requests for closure in 2021. If someone has closed a street for fireworks please call 911.
4. Fireworks can be especially stressful for pets and lost pet reports are common from the July 4^th holiday. Make sure your pet is in a safe and secure place.
