The Emergency Evacuation Bridge currently under construction by Quigg Brothers, Inc. is the first phase of the overall Council approved pedestrian evacuation route. The pedestrian bridge has been designed to be Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliant and will help kids travel to and from school, help members of this rural community walk across town, and it is an important evacuation route in the event of a lahar. A lahar is a mixture of mudflow, volcanic material, and debris that may happen after an eruption. The City of Orting is in the possible lahar pathway in the event of a volcanic eruption from Mt. Rainier. In the event of a lahar or a major flood event, students and residents will utilize the bridge to safely cross SR-162. Visit the News Release for additional details and photos.
