Public Notice: Water Main Flushing
May 6th - May 24th- 9:00pm - 5:00am
Orting Public Works annually flushes our water system to maintain clean, reliable drinking water. Flushing removes rust, sediment, and mineral deposits, ensuring optimal water quality.
Why Flushing is Important? Flushing clears buildup in pipes and ensures water quality. It also checks hydrant functionality, fire flows, and system maintenance needs.
How Do We Flush Pipelines? We open multiple fire hydrants at once, increasing water flow and velocity. Flushing begins overnight and progresses from water storage tanks outward.
What to Expect During Flushing? We place high-visibility signs in advance to indicate flushing areas. Temporary water pressure decreases are normal and disturbed sediment may produce discolored water.
What to Do if Water is Discolored? Discolored water may appear light brown to dark tea colored. Cloudy water contains harmless air bubbles that dissipate over time. Run cold water for a few minutes to clear sediment, remove faucet aerators/screens and avoid using high water use appliances during flushing.
