Pierce County READS

What if everybody read the same book, at the same time, in the same community? Find out February-April 2008, during Pierce County Library System and The News Tribune’s first community one book program: Pierce County READS, sponsored by Key Foundation, a foundation funded by KeyBank.

Pierce County READS is a community involvement program where everybody in one place, at one time, reads, talks about, shares and enjoys the same book.

The goal of Pierce County READS is to result in thousands of residents reading, discussing and enjoying the same book, and coming together as a community.

  • Many community partners are also participating in Pierce County’s first READ program: Associated Ministries, Barnes & Noble, Borders, Clover Park Technical College, Fort Lewis Library, Garfield Book Company, King’s Books, Lakewood Historical Society and History Museum, McChord Air Force Base Library, Mostly Books, Pacific Lutheran University, Pierce College, Pierce County Library Foundation and donors, Pierce County Library Friends organizations, Puyallup Public Library, Roy Public Library and Sumner Arts Commission.

The City of Orting plans to proclaim February through April 2008 Pierce County READS.

Community one-book programs have been wildly successful in communities throughout the United States. The Library, Key Foundation, The News Tribune and the numerous community partners will invite people throughout the county to participate during a focused three-month period. Pierce County READS 2008 is targeted for adults with an anticipation that college and high school students may participate, too.

Feb. 3, 2008, Pierce County Library System and The News Tribune will unveil the featured book and author for Pierce County READS 2008. Look for the announcement in Pierce County Libraries, The News Tribune and online @ www.piercecountylibrary.org.

  • Hint: the 2008 Pierce County READS book is written by a worldwide best selling author and this book has been a best seller. Readers will be engaged by the novel’s cunning craft and discussion of moral values.

Pierce County Reads will conclude with the author giving a free presentation at Pacific Lutheran University, Olson Auditorium, on April 26. Attendees may meet the Pierce County READS 2008 award-winning author and have their books signed.

Washington State Library, Office of the Secretary of State, and the Institute of Museum and Library Services awarded Pierce County Library Foundation with A One City One Book grant to support Pierce County Library’s Pierce County READS. Rainier Pacific Foundation is an event supporter.
