Retired Police Chief Ron Emmons introduced Sergeant Gard to law enforcement in the summer of 1993.  Sergeant Gard served three years as a Reserve Police Officer while attending Pacific Lutheran University.  Sergeant Gard was subsequently hired full time in 1996.

Two years later, Sergeant Gard was appointed as the department’s Narcotics Investigator.  Sergeant Gard quickly accumulated numerous federal and state certifications from the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), Office of National Drug Control Policy, Multi-jurisdictional Counter-drug Task Force, Midwest Counter-drug Task Force and others.   In his 11 years of full-time law enforcement service, Sergeant Gard has interdicted and apprehended hundreds of violent and non-violent criminal offenders and submitted several thousand illicit items into the Orting Police Department’s evidence section.

Sergeant Gard is federally certified to investigate, raid and dismantle illicit drug laboratories.  During his tenure with the Pierce County Sheriff’s Metro Clandestine Lab Team, Sergeant Gard and his teammates raided and dismantled over 100 methamphetamine labs throughout Pierce County.

Sergeant Gard served as a Primary Investigator for the Metro Crime Response Unit.  The Crime Response Unit provides professional and accurate major-felony investigations, including homicide, for numerous jurisdictions throughout Pierce County.

Sergeant Gard was promoted to his current rank in 2005.  The Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission awarded Sergeant Gard with Career Level Certifications in Middle Management and Supervisory Management in August, 2007.
