downtown vision plan
The City of Orting and Chamber of Commerce are leading a community process to create a long-term vision for Downtown Orting. This Plan will include recommendations for changes to the development regulations, strategies for increasing Orting’s community and tourism attractions, and actions for improving the look and function of Downtown. The City held a day-long workshop in February where property and business owners and other stakeholders brainstormed ideas for the vision. We also conducted a survey to find out what people like or don’t like about Downtown. Now we are working on analysis of conditions and possibilities that came out of the workshop and survey. Two new reports are now available for review.
Downtown Orting Survey Results
Downtown Orting Survey Analysis
The on-line survey has been tabulated and summarized. Almost 120 people participated. The “Downtown Orting Survey Results” report shows the results. It points out the importance of facilities and services like the post office, library, and restaurants. It also indicates how Downtown is lacking in many consumer goods like hardware, electronics, health care, office supplies, and clothing. The respondents have a great many ideas about how we can work to improve Downtown.
A financial feasibility analysis of the development potentials of Downtown Orting sites has been completed. The “Downtown Orting Survey Analysis ” report summarizes this work. It uses assumptions about land values, construction costs, and other factors that may or may not truly reflect current conditions. The purpose of the analysis is to help us see how developers and business owners will look at Downtown and decide if it has potential for them to make new investments. Current code requirements for parking and building heights will need further attention.
In July, we expect to have a preliminary draft Downtown Vision Plan for public review. This will include everything that has been discussed and proposed, and will feature recommendations for changes to the City regulations as well as for ways that the business community and property owners can help to improve the Downtown. We will schedule open houses and public meetings then to talk more.
Orting Comprehensive Flood Hazard Management Plan (CFHMP) OPen House
Citizens are invited to attend an open house for the Orting Comprehensive Flood Hazard Management Plan on Thursday, May 15, from 4 to 6 pm. The open house will be held at the Orting Multi-Purpose Center, 202 Washington Ave S, Orting, WA 98360.
The City of Orting has received a grant to prepare a Comprehensive Flood Hazard Management Plan (CFHMP). An Advisory Committee consisting of representatives from participating City departments, state agencies, and tribes has been convened to assist with identification of key strategies and priorities and to review the plan elements as they are developed.
This open house will present the information the City and advisory committee have been working on for the past six months. This includes goals, actions, strategies, and mapping. This will be an opportunity for citizens to see progress that has been made, and to see what kinds of options may be available for flood management in Orting.
Benefits of a Flood Plan include:
- Improved, up-to-date knowledge of the river systems;
-
Better understanding of flood hazards.
-
Better understanding of risk.
-
Identifying projects to protect our community.
-
Increased public awareness.
